CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
TOURISM MSME ENTREPRENEURIAL TRAINING THROUGH INCUBATION PROCESS
The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Wildlife (MoTCW) in collaboration with Mzuzu University (MZUNI) with funding from the African Development Bank (ADB) under the Promoting Investment: and Competitiveness in the Tourism Sector (PICTS) Project has established a Tourism Incubation Centre.
The Tourism Incubation Centre under the Faculty of Tourism, Hospitality and Management of MZUNI is aimed at equipping youths and women who wish to operate or are operating Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) with Entrepreneurial and business skills.
The Mzuzu University is, therefore, inviting
applications from individuals, startups and MSMEs to participate in the incubation program which is scheduled to commence in February, 2022.
The incubation activities will be conducted at the Dunduzu Campus of Mzuzu University and its Online and Distance Learning (ODeL) satellite centres in Karonga, Lilongwe, Balaka and Mulanje.
The selected candidates will undergo an
intensive incubation process for a period
of 6 months upon which the successful
projects will have an opportunity to access grants that the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Wildlife is disbursing under the PICTS project.
The applications are categorised into clusters. Interested individuals should submit a duly completed Application Form together with the following details and documents specifying the cluster they are applying for:
1) START-UP BUSINESSES (BUSINESSES
IN OPERATION FOR LESS THAN A YEAR)
This Cluster shall include start-ups from women and youth who have business ideas or their businesses are not currently licensed by the Tourism and Hotels Board. These women and youth shall possess:
a) Minimum training and/or experience in the tourism and hospitality sector.
b) Have an idea of a tourism business, product or service they are interested in.
c) Are committed to undergo the incubation process successfully.
- EXISTING BUSINESS (LICENSED OR
UNLICENSED BY THE TOURISM AND
This cluster shall include businesses
that need a new orientation in operating
their businesses, restructuring, or strategic repositioning. These will be Considered if the business owner can:
a) Present a clear business idea or plan.
b) Demonstrate existence of a clear
c) Willingness to accomplish assigned
tasks as part of the incubation process.
3) UPSCALING BUSINESS
This cluster shall include Successful MSMES that are seeking to grow. For an MSME to qualify for this cluster, it will have to demonstrate:
a) Evidence of business registration
and licence (Tourism and Hotels Board).
b) Evidence of business operation (where applicable; address of traceable business premises, websites, etc.).
c) Evidence of business success (where applicable; Financial statements, tax filings, client/ customer testimonials, etc.).
d) A well specified type of upscaling desired (revenue, number of units premises, number of Customers/ markets served, extra funding, number of employees, etc.).
e) Capacity or willingness to sustain the growth aspired for.
f) Willingness to become partners (mentors, role models, internship hosts) to the Incubation Centre.
NOTE: Applicants with ideas on businesses in Niche Tourism products e.g Avitourism (Birding), Adventure Tourism, Cultural Tourism, etc will have an added advantage.

refundable application fee of K5, 000.00

Please note that the programs, apart from
the non-refundable application fee of K5,
000.00, are free of charge. However, incubates will be required to foot bills for their own transport, accommodation and food over the duration of the incubation programme.
