PRESS RELEASE

RENEWAL OF PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION, PRIVATE PRACTICEAND PREMISES LICENSES FOR 2022/23 FY

The Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act was enacted in 1987 to provide for the establishment of the Medical Council of Malawi whose main objective is to protect patients and the public from harm and regulate the Medical, Dental, Para-medical and Allied Health Professions.

Medical Council of Malawi wishes to:

  1. Inform all Medical, Dental and Allied Health Practitioners, Directors and proprietors of public, private and faith based health facilities that the renewal for their 2022-2023 annual
professional registration, private practice licenses and premises licenses is now open.
The deadline for renewal falls on 31st March, 2022.

2. Advise the Directors and Administrators of health institutions, faith based health facilities
and non-governmental organizations to submit the staff return of practitioners registered
under the Medical Council of Malawi jurisdiction indicating their names and registration numbers so that we can prepare invoices.

3. Remind students doing medical, dental and allied health courses registrable by the Medical Council that they are required to be registered as student practitioners. If registration has not been done yet, reach out to MCM for payment and registration processing.

The Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act No. 17 of 1987 (Sections 24, 26, 27) imposes a mandatory duty for every practitioner, and facility to register with the Council as a perquisite for service provision. Furthermore, Sections 59 and 60 of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act indicate, it is an offense for the Proprietors and Head of Institutions to employ unregistered persons to practice and prohibits unregistered persons to practice.

In conclusion, Medical Council of Malawi would like to notify all practitioners and health facilities that payments should not be deposited into individuals account but only to MCM bank accounts and should be receipted except those who would want to physically pay at the Council.
